"I'm not the only girl Klaus did that to,” Sadie said. “I’ve talked to several others. If you want my opinion, I totally believe Lainey Roberts. And it wouldn't surprise me if he killed Julieta Peterson. Klaus always kind of gave me the creeps, even before he did what he did. He had a temper, and he could fly off the handle at a moment’s notice. I could totally see him being out on the water with that girl, making moves. Maybe she did what I did and fought back? Maybe she threatened to go to the police? Maybe Klaus killed her and said it was an accident? Who knows?"

Brooke headed back toward the table, her hands full with two margaritas and a glass of whiskey.

Sadie’s eyes flared. “Do NOT tell Brooke I said that," she whispered.

Sadie flashed a smile when her friend returned.

Brooke served the drinks, and we toasted again.

"You have an interesting group of friends," Brooke said, watching JD and the band interact with the groupies.

"You're looking at Wild Fury. The next rock sensation."

The girls seemed intrigued.

"If you like ‘80s rock 'n' roll, you should come check out the show Saturday night. They’re headlining at Sonic Temple."

The girls exchanged a glance, telepathically communicating with each other. After a brief exchange, their eyes flicked back to mine.

"Sounds like fun," Brooke said. She hesitated a moment. "So, are you allowed to fraternize with people you meet on the job?"

"Depends on the situation. We're fraternizing right now, aren't we?"

"I think my friend wants to fraternize between the sheets," Sadie said.

Brooke smacked her arm playfully. "I do not!"

"Liar."

I chuckled. "Something like that is probably best left until the investigation is complete."

Brooke sipped her margarita, then shyly asked, “So, how long do these types of investigations usually last?"

Sadie rolled her eyes.

"Sometimes they come together pretty quickly, sometimes they drag on for years."

"In that case, let's hope you’re good at your job,” she said with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes.

I chatted with the girls for a bit, bought them a round of drinks, then decided it would probably be best if I returned to my friends.

My phone buzzed with a text from Sloan. I cringed when I looked at the display. I did not want to get in the middle of this.

[Hey, how is he doing?]

[Okay, I guess.]

[I haven't heard anything from him since…]

[What did you expect?]

[I just want to make sure he's okay. I do still care about him.]

[Maybe you should tell him that.]

[I think that would only make things harder. Take care of him, will you?]

[Always.]

Jack had a brunette on one arm and a blonde on the other. He was doing just fine. At least, as far as outward appearances were concerned.

"What's the story with those two?" he asked when I returned, nodding to Brooke and Sadie.

I filled him in on the additional information.

"Revenge is a powerful motive,” he said.

"Yeah, but it seems like there were a lot of people that wanted to take revenge on Klaus. I don't feel like we’re any closer to solving this thing.
